Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is used to help you recover following oral surgery procedures, such as an implant placement or bone or tissue graft. It is a biocompatible treatment and is designed to work with your body to improve the healing process and help you recover more quickly.
Your blood contains four main ingredients: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. The platelets in your blood are responsible for causing blood clotting and initiating the healing process, and they contain proteins and growth factors that are released to aid in healing and reduce inflammation. Platelet-rich fibrin is derived from your blood. When you receive PRF, our periodontist will first draw a small amount of blood from your arm. This blood will then be spun in a centrifuge to create the PRF, which is yellow and gelatin-like in consistency. The PRF is then carefully applied to the surgical site, where it will work to increase your rate of healing, protect the site from infection, and enrich it with proteins and growth factors.
